Assuming your layover at LAX is less than 12 hours, and not overnight, printing YVR on the tag is standard procedure. But, yes, in the unlikely event that your bag were only tagged to LAX, and the even more unlikely event that you arrive at TBIT… (edit: I changed my mind) even then I suspect there's someone at TBIT who could re-tag your bags. UA offers connecting flights to many passengers who fly with airlines that arrive at TBIT, even if UA normally does not.
