Merced is most definitely not Socal...but not quite Norcal either. Either way, it is decently located for daytrips into Yosemite if one doesn't mind a bit of driving.
Just to warn anyone who might be thinking of doing that, you'll likely hate yourself, as I did, on those 4-5hr daily RT drives into Yosemite NP (the valley, Tioga Rd, Glacier Pt, and Mariposa Grove).
