We did that a year or so before C, just used the rental car and left our luggage in it for the day before returning it. The Udvar H Centre is magnificent. I really like Duxford but this seems twice as big although might just seem that way as it's all under one roof. The Space Shuttle was a LOT bigger that I anticipated. You'll have a great time.
I would never, ever do this - as a victim myself of a car break in in Marbella a few years back, valuables left in car aren't often covered under travel insurance. I came out very badly on this front !
