Bags fly free helps to open overhead bin space. More on some flights than others obviously but I've always had good luck with my bag fitting, even without the extra large overhead bins some other carriers have.
Intra California over my past 50 flights or more I have not seen any bags forced to be checked. That’s despite the much higher fraction of leisure travelers than pre pandemic.
