I left my AirPods case on a 772 around Christmas and tracked it through Gate C20, a service building at ORD, and then finally at a 3-story/3-flat private residence in Wicker Park a few driving minutes from my place. I filed a lost item report immediately and was constantly updating the location of the Airpods on the report but never got a response from United.
I called ORD airport police and United lost and found phone number but it is now just an IVR recording. Eventually I went to the private residence's precinct police station and was advised that I could call 911 at the residence and have a squad car dispatched to that location. That way, the officers could help me knock on doors and ask the residents but they would not be able to enter and search without a search warrant even with a live location in the Find My app. I didn't have time to do all that that day so I took a picture of the mailbox with residents' names. I did a quick search but couldn't link any of the names to United and its affiliates. A week later when I was flying out of ORD, I went to the United lost and found desk located behind the baggage service center and provided the address of the residence but the agents couldn't help either.
Eventually I filed for credit card's purchase protection and gave up
