Based on the rules from the Star Alliance web page, it appears you need a “card”. The real question is - does it have to be a physical or can a virtual card work.
I think reaching out *A customer service sounds like a good thing at this point - they need to update their physical/digital card policy. In this digital times, a digital pass should really be an option. If I can use my Apple Wallet to use my credit cards, one would think that a UC membership can be also used digitally. Even Priority Pass and Dragon Pass use digital wallet cards/apps.
Once a the policy is updated and socialized on the *A website then the other issue the training and management of the staff who are at the entry points of of the lounge to understand what is allowed and what is not. We’re living in a digital age after-all - barcodes, QR codes, etc. Even BPs are app friendly, lol. Once less card would be great to have to carry, but honestly I think I would still take it with me once provided.
