Sorry to be such a frequent flyer on this thread. I’ve been lucky and fortunate in receiving and being approved for many of these offers over the past 2 years. So much so I’m beginning to think that between MR and airline miles I may never have to pay cash (other than UA TB) for an airline ticket again, an immensely satisfying feeling.
Speaking of rethinking things, I’ve had a 180 shift in my thoughts about AmEx retention offers. Until a few months ago I thought a lucrative retention offer was worth accepting and I intensely followed the retention offer thread. As I accumulated more and more AmEx targeted NLL biz cards I started thinking I might have “too many” open cards and thus less interest in retention offers. A few weeks ago I had a targeted NLL biz application “pending”, my first targeted NLL biz non-instant approval, probably due to having the maximum of 10 AmEx charge cards open. (I closed 3 or 4 accounts, made 2 recon calls and the application was approved the next day.) That experience solidified my thoughts that for those lucky and fortunate in receiving and being approved for many of these offers, a retention offer is much less attractive.
Additionally, we haven’t seen many datapoints suggesting that it’s unwise or counterproductive to close (multiples of) these accounts at 1 year of age.
Wondering how others with multiple AmEx cards think about retention offers. Thank you.
