They did this for me on SFO-LAX last year when I got to the gate towards later part of boarding. Not sure if it was because I was in F, EXP, E175 aircraft, connecting internationally, or some combination of the above, but they didn't seem to be offering this to anyone else boarding around the same time (they were gate checking bags to be delivered to baggage claim).
