Same for UA. I have to get a green tag from the GA for my work bag when flying from ORD or the like to a lesser airport on a regional jet. I put the tag on my bag, keep the receipt (green tag is two-part), and either drop it at the end of the jetway or a cart (in the case of ATW) and retrieve the bag on the jetway on arrival at ORD.

When I hear an UA GA 'offering' to gate check bags, the language is unambiguous - 'This is a full flight and space is limited. I'll check the bag, free of charge, to your final destination'; 'and be sure you carry on your medications, etc.'. I put 'offering' in quotes, because I've seen late group 3 into group 4 passengers who are forced to gate check bags due to lack of space on a full flight.
