I wonder if part of the issue today and through the weekend is the strikes in Germany causing all flights to be cancelled. FRA is closed on the 27th and MUC the 26th and 27th. I imagine that more than a few revenue J pax are looking to be reaccommodated. Perhaps such pax are higher priority than eupgraded pax, and perhaps then the OP's experience is an outlier rather than a sign of increasing frequency.
That it happens at all for any reasons other than the ones Canadiancow notes is concerning, of course.
