I’ve stayed in a few Holiday inn Express hotels in South America recently, and every one of them has had a safe in the room, including Quito in Ecuador, and Bogotá and Cartagena in Colombia.

So my guess is that it also largely depends upon the security situation/requirements of the particular region in which you are staying.
