A charter cruise on Holland America LInes that I had booked for March 2020 was cancelled due to Covid 1 week prior to departure. HAL reimbursed "regular" passengers' cruises (as per the contract), but said charterers were on their own for those obligations; HAL would not award reimbursement or credits to any charter cruisers. After legal wrangling cruisers were repaid about 75% by the charterer. I had opted not to insure the trip since it was domestic, my choice. The airline (probably AA, don't remember) and hotel restored and extended my points and I was able to use them timely later on.

Lots of unusual things happened during the early pandemic. My work was initially super busy because of all the sick people and I too didn't worry about the travel details as there was just too much other life-and-death stuff going on. Later when things slowed I was laid off for a couple months and since I was a contractor not an employee - no unemployment or PTO.

If it was in the contract, the buyer (me) has to live with it. AA could have been better with your customer service OP, but they just don't worry about the customers say "I'll never." AA made reasonable accommodations and then chose not to make any exceptions.
