If you find this interesting may I recommend a book in a similar vein:
"Beyond the blue horizon" by Alexander Frater.
Written in the 80's, using modern flight routes it traces the UK-Australia route of the Imperial Airways Empire service, when flying boats were used.
Well known amongst enthusiasts, but others may find it an interesting read. One of my favourite travel books.
