For when it’s gate checked, either because it’s an RJ or involuntarily. Or as a back-up in case your bag isn’t anywhere near you in the OH bin and someone takes it either or purpose or accidentally and you don’t realize it until you actually get to the bin where it was and discover it’s not there.
I have an AirTag in my backpack (and, now my wallet - partially thanks to the social media clown who left his on a plane but also because I thought I left mine in a restaurant).
