For EXP 500 mile upgrades on award tickets, I believe that only applies to AAdvantage-issued tickets. See https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-p...limentaryterms. Specifically, see this bullet (emphasis added): "AAdvantage Executive Platinum® members are also eligible to use their complimentary upgrade benefit on AAdvantage® award tickets."
