One major reason I book through a luxury TA is because I NEVER got an upgrade booking on my own through FHR or Virtuoso. Barring the very few venues that grant an upgrade at time of booking, e.g., Le Bristol (and then only up to jr suite level). Now, I pretty much am upgraded whenever I travel. FHR and Vurtuoso benefits are much diluted these days. Although the included breakfast still is useful.
