Regarding point 1, opulent it was indeed; we had access to a power plug next to the table :-D
Regarding point 2, I understand the fact not all international destinations have those restrictions. but then, just dedicate some space at the gate area to perform those checks in a decent manner. The jetty is simply not the place to do so... It's not like if the new terminal did not have enough space right...?
