The third option seems to be a no brainer. But what is the catch? I never booked this type of room rate before.
No catch and no there is no minimum night requirement (well, at least not as a blanket Hyatt rule...the property may put restrictions on it). This is simply the way the award chart works and, as with all award charts, it allows you to find the sweet spots.
Option 1 =
all points booking which is 30k/night for a premium suite at cat 4.
Option 2 =
cash + points which is typically approx. half the rate of a premium suite + half the points of a premium suite
Option 3 =
points upgrade which is
standard rate for a base room + 9k points
As you are seeing, when a high category hotel has a reasonably low standard rate, option 3 will pretty much always be the best. Also note, this isn't always available. It's the hotel's choice whether to make any of the options above available on any given night...but that said, it's certainly not unusual to see these options and wonder why one is so much better than another.
