marketing carrier meaning

I was sent the below info from american airlines customer service. Is this actually correct?
I thought the marketing carrier was the company with the flight number? not the site you buy it from?

Reason is :
trying to buy international flights on american website..including jal and alaskan flights with the jal and alaskan flight numbers..
will this be based on the aa revenue chart or the partner distance one? message from american airlines seems to suggest it would be american
but is this correct?
thanks

As far as your earning question, the Loyalty Points are earned based on

the marketing carrier. The marketing carrier is the company that sold

the seat to the passenger. If bought from Japan Airlines you would earn

based on their rules.
