You would need to - pay to buy into J either in advance or at the airport. You can't influence an operational upgrade - this may or may not happen depending on which cabins are, if any, over booked on the day. BA don't upgrade for status or any other reasons.

And when is the flight ? The aircraft type could easily change again if it's a few months out
