I actually called Delta when I encountered the additional fees/Miles problem and the agent said yup that's the way it is. With Delta getting so heavy handed about sticking it to passenger I just assumed I had no other options. I wonder how long the hold time is to speak to a supervisor?

Fortunately my story has a happy ending. I logged on to my account EARLY this morning and was able to change both tickets with no additional charges.
