I looked at this scenario a couple of times today without actually committing to the changes and several times it was an even swap and another time required 106k MORE miles or the other paid ticket went up by $1,300. I’m afraid to change 1ticket only to find the other one now has a huge premium over what we paid. This is for a couple of business class tickets if that matters.
Thanks for your insight
Since you have a Delta-initiated schedule change (and not a voluntary one) there should be NO penalty for choosing a more reasonable schedule, regardless of whether it is a paid cash ticket, or a miles ticket. Over the last year or so the website has gotten better about allowing this automatically as an “even exchange” but sometimes it still goofs up and wants to collect an additional fare. If that is what is happening, don’t attempt to change things online yourself. Call in to Delta and tell them both reservations have had schedule changes, and you have already found your preferred new flights. Don’t mention anything about the website trying to charge for one ticket or the other. The agent should change both for no fare without any issues. If they give you any push back, either ask for a supervisor or hang up and call again.
