BA is correct in refusing to pay for your accommodation as you have been rebooked with a overnight connection at YYZ at your request (and you seem to have accepted this, so most likely there is no issue).
I don't see enough details to be sure on this, but if there was no viable same day service (Vancouver is laughable, but would be nice on the Avios earning), thereby forcing an overnight stay, then EC261 is totally clear that Right to Care would apply, including the hotel stay.
