Both this flight (UA839) and the SFO-SYD equivalent (UA863) have had some very odd flight-paths over the past few days. These flights generally head pretty much straight towards Sydney, and cross the coastline somewhere within the greater Sydney area. But for the past few days, they have been crossing the coast around 250 miles further north - just south of Coffs Harbour (and flying almost exactly over the top of my parents house!), then heading inland down to Sydney. The divert to Brisbane for UA839 happened over the Hunter Valley.
Todays UA863 has a filed flightplan that has it crossing the coast even further north - directly over OOL airport at the NSW/QLD border. This sounds like a flightplan designed to include a divert to BNE (which is 50 miles north of OOL)...
