Funny thing is I had an old 8 digit account before. Iberia created a new account for me when I applied for their Icon credit card, even though I told them I already had an account and gave it to them during the application process! It took 3 months for them to transfer my old 8 digit account to the new 9 digit, and now I am facing this issue with the Amex transfer.
I have the exact same issue as you, but did get it to work with a 9 digit IB number. I called them to initiate the transfer in the end of Feb, they were able to input the longer number. A week later I followed up, nothing. Another week later I complained to Amex via their official complaints email here in Spain. While I did not hear back from them (apart from a delivery confirmation), today, a week later, I do see the transferred avios in my Iberia account.
My next test wIll be to transfer a low number of Avios via the website to see if it works, or if it just was ‘made to work’ because I chose the official route.
Needless to say, the flight I wanted is long gone. The route via BA I discovered too late, that might have been a good option.
