I have no knowledge of Marriott systems but one thing I do is always to have back up cards and back ups for back ups. And I'd never use a debit card to pay a hotel bill because they can place holds that last beyond the dates of the stay. Additionally, sometimes banks need to be notified you'll be traveling -- which doesn't answer why they have no record of the attempt of the transaction.
