The idea for T1 to T3 is to maximise the use of the transit area so that everyone can enjoy the limited space. The best airport in the world seem to have given up the idea anyway for T4 with its centralised security after immigrations and its transit area isn't linked to T1-T3.

For T1-T3, there is a basic security check before you clear immigrations. You can't enter the transit area without a valid boarding pass and your passport.

I find gate security annoying since there are only 2 lines for the whole plane. You will also not be allowed to board the plane with bottled water you may have picked up at the lounge or in transit. Thank goodness for the water dispenser in the gate area.

Singapore has become very expensive. I suggest you also look into hotel prices during summer for a reality check. With the invitation out to world to do business in Singapore, it isn't exactly well priced for a family holiday.
