You are right. A lot of availabilities within 2 weeks of the departure date. But the problem is you will have to take that risk of "if something happened and no award seat to book". Most people including me try to book all travel reservations as early as possible once the decision is made. Since most people think in this way no wonder why it is so competitive to get an award ticket a year from now..
