It's important because different fees have different rules.
Regardless, I would email customer service, explain the situation, and ask if it was possible to get a refund or credit. There are rules, but exceptions are sometimes made. Last year customer service allowed me to get travel credit for a basic economy ticket with SWUs attached because my destination (Korea) changed their COVID policy and I didn't want to go any more. There was no arguing -- i asked and they said yes, the first time.
