If this is a domestic/USA only itin, the maximum allowed connection without creating a stopover is 4 hours if a shorter connection exists. If s stopover is created, it will impact the cost of the ticket. The costs depends on the fare rules. But generally it will price as two oneways.
On an International ticket, the connection can be up to 24 hours without creating a stopover, International fare rules will often offer stopovers for a fixed additional fare.
Mulit-city is probably the best way to create to longer connection but many times UA, the normal flight search, will offer longer connection options less than a stopover
