Eg a transit of 18 hours is chosen as its cheaper but there is the shortest possible of 14 hours and that is more expensive.
I have observed the same patterns too - the connections that qualify for transit hotels or stopover hotels are generally more expensive (Europe to Asia) - unless it involves a 96 hours connecting time at IST.
