It's not any differnt at the other legacies. If you know your plans far in advance and the fare and you know enough about the airfares on the route there is very little drawback to buying early. Yes, you may not fly an itinerary that looks much like what you bought, but you will get there for the fare you paid (or get a refund).

My domestic flights that I buy months ahead of time are almost always legs of an international itinerary. DL and AA have been more problematic for me than AS. UA has been better.
