In early Feb I went on a work trip, hotel rooms were paid by the company, I was there for 4 nights but didn't get any credit. The response I got from Marriott was, "We appreciate the chance to help you with your account. We apologize we are unable to post this stay to your account as your hotel bill does not show any eligible charges."
End of Feb my company did a buyout of a Marriott, I was there for 5 nights, I'm also told that wasn't eligible.
Is the only way to get points and stays to pay myself?
As
Marriott Bonvoy Lurker correctly states, yes, you have to pay for the charges to your room(s) to earn. If your company pays, no points or nights for you.
