He would have the choice under EC261 Article 8 to either rebooking to a new date, or reimbursement of the entire trip, including the flights actually taken, provided he can demonstrate that the trip no longer serves any purpose in relation to the original travel plan. And probably EC261 compensation Article 7 if the delay was cause by the handling difficulties discussed elsewhere. More details in the main EC261 thread.
