What is your favourite way of using Amex travel credits?

I have $200 and $100 travel credit on my amex platinum and gold cards respectively. I prefer to book direct with airlines in case of any issues and so far I have found that hotels booked through Amex travel agency are not necessarily the best deal. Looking for inspiration...
