Indeed, but bear in mind that someone falling seriously and unexpectedly ill or having an accident is considered a situation beyond the passengers' control, a divorce - however sad and painful - is not likely to be. In that sense, there may be a bit less flexibility/fee waiving in the OP's case than in the ones that you describe (even if the reps were tactful enough not to tell you about how they made things easier for you due to the circumstances you or other passengers were dealing with).
So I would explore every option, but it might be that just losing the deposit might be the best one in some cases. And yes, you can always reprice, but obviously remember that a repricing doesn't mean that will be to half the price for two people - it will effectively depend on room pricing basis (e.g. in the US where hotels tend to be per room, the single price for the holiday may be a lot more than half the cost for two, in some European or Asian countries where many hotels have single rooms priced at about half of the double, especially if including board, the splitting may be at almost no cost).
