This is indeed frustrating since the idea of the companion voucher is basically "bring a companion with you for ~$100 plus some taxes/fees", but getting forced into a higher fare bucket means there's an extra hidden cost to bring your companion.

No idea if there's any way around it - I just begrudgingly accepted it last time, perhaps should have looked for a workaround.
