Deflecting any admissions of wrongdoing is a standard strategy. Airlines offer "one-time commercial gestures", "settlements", etc. all kinds of shut-up money. If they admitted that they are paying compensation, they would implicitely admit that they denied compensation previously where it was due, which they don't want to do for obvious reasons.
