Ah, my first try after having not visited for a while, had been rejected and required assistance. After that, it's always worked and I was advised to press down firmly on top of my passport. If I recall, when using the CDG e-gates (during the few times when they're open for US passports), I had received the opposite advice, to not press down, at all.
