Makes sense if you are regularly in SF, not really if you're only visiting occasionally.
It also makes sense if you also USE this product on a regular basis :-)
Just today I used it for a total of $9 or so and now my balance is $2.50. Despite the 3xCSR bonus, I’ll just reload it when I need some more credit.

It's so easy and convenient, and I also use my Chase CSR for it for 3x points. In my family of four, we have four Clipper Cards, which I got many years ago. I set up autopay maybe two years ago with my current Chase CSR.
And since then, nobody in my family gives it a thought. You put your card on the sensor, and done.
Nosy - does your family handle the actual cards or have any of them converted to using Clipper on their phones? I use clipper on my phone wallet and I don’t miss dealing with the card.
