Normally I use the landside method so I can have a ciggie between flights so have never experienced how it operates.
There are 2 Flight Connections, one specifically for UK and Ireland. That has the passport gates and then Conformance specifically for those connecting to UK, Ireland and Crown Dependencies. There is a Red Telephone there if you particularly want to chat to HMRC/Border Force, otherwise you clear customs in EDI, where there another Red Telephone on the side of the baggage hall area.
