I always travel in the last row of WT and board last regardless of boarding group.
In all of the countless flights, I can only think one occasion where my bag wasn't stored above my seat and that was only because the locker was faulty.

The lockers in long haul can swallow a lot of luggage, doubly so if your bags are squashable.
