4) MRT Purple Line (southern ext): preliminary site prep works underway

The ARL ext from Phaya Thai to DMK will commence construction in October. The ARL is now part of the Eastern HSR line (3 Airport Line) rebadged as AERA 1.The CPconsortium wasmeant to take over operations of the ARL late last year and then earlier this year, but they delayed payment of the 1st payment to the SRT.

Delays with the opening of the MRT Pink and MRT Yellow monorail lines
The 1st stage of the MRT Yellow line will now not open until Jan 2023 from Samrong to Pattanakarn/Hua Mark (interchange with ARL at Hua Mark)

The 1st stage of the MRT Pink line will not open until Feb 2023 from Miniburi to Laksi (interchange with the SRT Dark red line).The line is still planned to open in 3 stages - 2nd stage in mid 2023.

Further delays with the opening of the MRT Pink and MRT Yellow monorail lines
The MRT Yellow line and MRT Pink line were due to open as per I posted above. However, In early Nov it was obvious that there were significant delays with the installing of systems and also with fitting out of stations and exit/entrances installation - stairs and escalators. Accordingly, in mid Dec the BSR announced that both lines would now open later in 2023. Initially, it was said to be June for the Yellow line and August for 1st stage of Pink but more recently.it is now;

Yellow line in December 2023 - the full line
Pink line in early 2024 - Minburi to Govt complex . Full line in mid 2024.
There are the 6th opening dates that have been announced for both lines in the last 20 months. However, this time they have at least allowed some extra time to complete all installation and 2-3 months of full line testing which is already occuring to some extent.

ARL ext from Phaya Thai to DMK
For the Airport Link the CP consortium did finally take over operations in Sept last year after missing 3 payment deadlines. However, they have delayed starting works on the estension to DMK and the Eastern HSR line (AKA 3 Airport line) as the consortium is seeking to renegotiate the terms of the contract and concession in a post Covid context. When they originally signed the contract in Oct 2019 they stated that the line would be operational by 2024.

Assuming that construction does begin mid 2023 to Q3 2023, then this line will not be completed until late 2028 and more likely well into 2029.

Meanwhile, NE HSR line to Korat progresses slowly
The 250km long Stage 1 of the NE HSR line to Korat is only 15% built as of end of 2022. The govt is stating that this line will open in mid to late 2026, but 2027 is more realistic. Next year the govt plans to start construction of the 356km long Stage 2 ext to Nong Khai. This is planned to be completed by 2029/30 and will link with the Laos fast rail line which runs to China once that is extended 20kms south to the Mekong from Vietiane station and a new bridge (HSR & Thai NG tracks) is built 30m east of the current Friendship bridge.

There will be a lot of progress on this line in the next 18-24 months so we'll have a better idea of an opening date in early 2025.
