Is the purpose of this hub primarily to give more options for TATL traffic? BOS definitely doesn't seem to be a convenient domestic hub. But I can imagine that there are some cities that need connection to TATL that aren't currently flying into JFK (only LGA).
Any other reasons/theories?
BOS was sort of a mini-hub for AA even as AA had JFK (and LGA) — it had an AA flagship lounge for a while.
And DL has a habit of picking up to grow where AA retreats: JFK first, but also LAX and BOS.

I can't think of two airports that I'd have less faith in connecting in those two (three if you include EWR, but that's a small DL station) if I lived elsewhere in the US, given their propensity for delays.
For a long time, I preferred to do DCA-JFK-overseas than to deal with IAD going in or out of the country. I still prefer DCA to IAD, but my tolerance for IAD is higher now than before.
