ORD-RDU-TPA today, ORD-RDU delayed half hour so I'd likely miss my connection. Was #1 on both upgrade lists and got RDU-TPA upgrade today and still #1 for 1 seat available on ORD-RDU

Called EXP desk, great service, swapped me to ORD-TPA nonstop for no additional charge. Put me on the upgrade list, also #1 for this flight with 1 seat available. Let's see if I get it, tho.

Is this normal to get swapped to a non-stop flight for no charge even though it was probably $150 more for the seat? For some reason I was always under the impression that a delay would let me rebook, but at the prevailing rate.
