I've been looking at whether it is worth to get Workdeluxe (with Air NZ) or business class (with Qantas) for myself, partner and 1 year old. Thinking is that it would be better to have that space for our 1 year old to not disturb others/get disturbed.

It would be our 1 year old first time on a long flight. It would be helpful to get others views/experience with travelling trans tasman with a 1 year old.
If you’re thinking of flying J then it’s not only $$$ but it will also mean at least one parent will have to sit across the aisle and less able to assist the other parent. WLG is all narrow body aircraft on 737s or A320s on NZ, QF or JQ and QF J configuration is 2-2 on the 737.

Having travelled with a 13 month old SYD-HKG in economy, it’s fine.

In fact because you’ll have 3 seats and the 1 yo takes very little space, the adults essentially have J width but not the J legroom (which on QF is only about 7” more anyway).

Personally I’d save your money. It’s not a long flight.
