IC Toronto

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
This is for two stays in quick succession
1) Booked Junior Suite got upgraded to bi-level suite (2 category upgrade)
2) Booked King Classic on points got upgraded to Club Junior Suite (2 category upgrade at least)

How are the rooms?
As noted in my previous reviews, the rooms are getting a bit tired and the hotel could use a refresh. I was very happy with the bi-level suite, one of the biggest hotel rooms I have ever been in. First floor was large living room, dining room with huge table, bathroom, Bedroom was on second floor and was quite large as well. Video here

Club Junior Suite was nice and quite spacious for a jr, nothing to complain about. Club rooms are also in need of a refresh

How is the exec. lounge?
Your standard IC lounge, staff was very nice, attentive. Due to quirks in Ontario alcohol laws (...), there is no self-serve alcohol in this lounge, you have to pay for it which is annoying.

Food is below par (see below) and needs improvement, but I find food in Toronto to be disappointing overall (trying too hard) so may just be my expectations. Breakfast quality was the lowest of all the lounges i have been to, the comp Hilton Gold breakfast I had in Victoria, BC at a Doubletree was much better which should not be the case.

I would not pay for Club access here, but it was nice to have as a benefit if that makes sense

What was good and what was bad?
Good
Great recognition of Diamond Amb benefits and nice upgrades
Staff is very nice and professional, hotels biggest asset
Rooms are large and spacious, if a bit tired
Great location near Union station
Wife says the spa is great

Bad
F&B is below par from the lounge to the restaurant (Azure) and more in line with Holiday Inn standard than IC.
We witnessed something when we arrived that my wife and I are still laughing about. We chose the drink voucher option as amenity, we ordered two draft Steamwhistle (local pilsner) which should be a no brainer. They were having problems with the tap, lots of foam coming out, it happens. Seeing them struggle, I offer to take the bottled version. I stopped my wife from saying something when the bartender grabbed a bottle and poured into the half poured glass of draft! Same beer no problem! The resulting warm, foamy mess was proudly presented to us and he moved on. I usually say something but wanted to see how far this would go. My wife ordered a Moscow Mule (pretty standard cocktail) and what she got was not that.

I find Toronto in general tries too hard to be different on the F&B front, I don't want mint leaves and an orange slice with my whiskey soda thank you, just whiskey and soda.

They need to up their game if they expect me to spend money here on F&B

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
As I stated in a previous version, the Fairmont is a nicer hotel but $$$. Given how well they treat me here and the upgrades they give me, I am a regular here. I just eat and drink somewhere else!
