On routes where no daytime flight is an option, I like the latest possible nighttime departure.
If I board at 5pm at ORD or wherever, I'm not sleeping at all on that flight. If I board at 9pm, I at least have a chance at a couple hours of sleep.
If it's already after noon by the time I get to my European hotel, there's at least a decent chance there's a room ready and I can shower and grab a quick nap. If I'm there at 8am there's almost no chance.
(This assumes I don't need the earlier flight to make a connection once in Europe.)
