In my experience about 1/3 of the merchants who take Amex only accepts physical cards but not mobile payment. So best to keep your card with you. Many convenience stores (7-11 and FamilyMart) and fast food restaurants (McDonalds and KFC) only accept certain local credit cards.
McD's definitely takes foreign credit cards, you may have to pay at a register and not the kiosk. For whatever reason contactless payment with foreign credit cards does not often work at many retailers (apart from Costco) but it will if you insert the chipped card into a reader.
