I had never tried either and brought back a jar of Vegemite from Australia when I was there last week. I finally got around to trying it - I put a little Vegemite on buttered toast. It was actually pretty good! I now wish I'd brought more back...though I suppose I can probably find it here if I look hard enough.
It's really just spreadable umami. It's amazing on a cheese toastie or with smashed avo. If you spread it on like Nutella then you're not going to have a nice time. Plenty of people also use it in gravy and stocks.
